The Galaxy Note is a large device. A small but growing group call it “the device”, though, saying it’s larger than life dimensions are the crème de la crème of what a smartphone should be. But even the Galaxy Note won’t keep everyone content wanting the biggest phone possible. Rumors have swirled for months that Samsung is working on something even bigger, so called “Mega” devices. And today, Samsung finally admitted to just that.

Introducing the 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch Galaxy Megas. With either a 5.8-inch or 6.3-inch display, they are hands down the largest “phones” you’ll find anywhere. What’s odd, though, is that while the screen size screams “premium”, the rest of the devices do not. In actuality, the Megas are really more of a mid-range device for people who simply want the largest screen possible.

The displays, for example, are only qHD/540 x 960 (5.8-inch) and 720p (6.3-inch) and the processor is straight out of 2010 as well – dual-core 1.4 GHz (5.8-inch) or dual-core 1.7 GHz (6.3-inch). The smaller Mega features 8 GB of storage while the larger model gets 8 and 16 GB options. Both models will share the same 8-megapixel camera, LTE support, microSD slot, built-in IR blaster and 1.5 GB of RAM. The OS of choice will (thankfully) be the most current Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Pricing hasn’t been revealed just yet but the current rumors say they’ll be cheaper than the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S 4 – two premium flagship devices.

So we’ve gotta ask: Who would want this and why? If you’re a display buff, the stretched sizes and lower resolution is going to lead to a pretty crappy picture. Backing up all those awesome life-sized pixels is a laundry list of mid-range, outdated internals that even the staunchest anti-iPhone fanboys can’t cover for.

Curious to see a Note II made to look like an iPhone in terms of size comparisons? Ubergizmo managed to snag a 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega and gave it a review of sorts. Keep in mind that it is non-final, pre-production hardware so somethings could be tweaked externally or internally before it hits the masses. Speaking of which, look for the Mega clan to hit Europe beginning next month and then filtering out to other territories (such as the U.S.) in the weeks and months after.
